Letter to investors, week 12

Dear investors,

The week from 16 to 22 March was gold's worst since 2011, with a decline of close to 10%. The master account closes at +6.1%, approximately +4% for you, on just three trading days. The account traded on Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday, with returns of around 2%, Wednesday included, the day of the Fed meeting. It did not trade on Thursday 19 and Friday 20: precisely the two days on which gold, after the meeting, lost almost $300 overnight and touched a low of $4,478. After the Fed meeting, market conditions changed within a few hours: wider spreads, reduced liquidity for Eid and moves of hundreds of dollars in a single direction. We preferred to suspend trading for two days and to resume when the market became readable again. We tell you with the same candour that refraining from trading is, for us, one of the most important risk management decisions.

To all of you who celebrated Eid al-Fitr, we renew our best wishes. A good week.

With kind regards,

Duemar International Duemar International FZ-LLC, Ras Al Khaimah

The week in the markets

For gold, the worst week since September 2011, about −10%, towards $4,497.

  • Wednesday 18 PPI above expectations, Fed unchanged and Powell's press conference. Gold rises towards $4,800 and overnight plunges from $4,833 to $4,538.
  • Thursday 19 Low at $4,478. Weighing on it: the closure of Hormuz, more hawkish central banks and gold selling in the Gulf region.
